We are living in a time when we place blind trust in the bits of information that make up the digital universe, while forgetting the fragility of this universe that can collapse at any moment, taking with it what we have stored. We also forget that even what is intangible never fully disintegrates.
Starting from photographs of a landscape recovered from a broken hard drive — corrupted and incomplete — Quark 2.0, an algorithm created by the artist, attempts to regenerate the original landscape, but fails. Instead, when it detects the presence of a viewer, it focuses on what might emerge from the impossibility of accessing a memory, generating a new landscape in a state of constant becoming, built from digital residues of images that no longer exist.
By depriving the Palacio del Almirante of light and flooding the atmosphere with the sound of the hard drive’s internal mechanism, the viewer is invited to imagine what it would be like to walk through the recesses of a broken hard drive: what passages might lead to the lost image, the irretrievable landscape, and what would happen upon finding it.
