Messages of the collision
Back projection – live original algorithm Quark 2.0, using data remanence and corrupted files from a broken hard drive – reacting to the presence of visitors. Sound: electromagnetic activity of the broken hard drive.
Messages of the collision, produces a new form of expression that emerges from corrupted, no longer ‘useful’ or ‘incomplete’ information. I have created and designed an algorithm to work with corrupted images of a landscape and data remanence retrieved from a broken hard drive. When the algorithm—Quark 2.0—detects the presence of people, it attempts, unsuccessfully, to regenerate the image of the landscape from the corrupted data. Instead, it generates potential information and possibilities: random and live transformations begin, and the landscape never returns to its original appearance, perpetually unfolding and imploding in a futile search for completion. In this interactive installation, visitors navigate my imagining of what it could be like to walk in the inner world of a broken hard drive. They hear the static of electrical noise and interference and the electromagnetic activity of the hard drive trying to read, unsuccessfully, its content.
